2019/20 LIGHTNING ATHLETICS TEAMS

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING

COACHES - MIKE FALKENBERG, KATRINA BROWN, DAN HENRY,

HAYLEY LUSH

This season saw growth and progress for both our Cross Country Running Team and for a number of individual athletes. Lightning runners who came out consistently for training practices saw significant improvement in their times and placings over last year. After some warm up competitions in September, including The Dawe Run and The Moose Meadows run we headed up to Canmore for the Zone Championships on October 9.  The Intermediate girls team was outstanding and came close to winning the team title. All together, eight Lightning Athletes qualified for the Provincial Championships at Echo Dale Park in Medicine Hat on October 19.

At the Provincial Championships on a very tough course Shianna Duda (22nd) and Paige Paquin (38th) had great races in the Intermediate Girls Race and improved their placings significantly from last year. Nyah McDonald and Brinley Davidson also ran well in the Jr. Girls Race.

For the first time in several years the Hunting Hills Cross Country took a grade 9 team to the Central Alberta Championships. Strong performances were achieved by Aira Kettyle Kozuback  in the girls race and James Perez in the boys race.

It has been a fantastic year of volleyball. The girls worked hard earning them some hardware (Silver-LTCHS Tourney, Bronze-HHHSTourney, Silver-CWAJHAA Tourney). This season has seen these girls improve so much and they finished in second place in the league.  am extremely proud of them and enjoyed coaching this group of ladies.

GRADE 9 BOYS VOLLEYBALL

COACH - PATRICK MCLEAN

The 2019 Grade 9 volleyball season was a great one.  Out of nineteen aspirants, thirteen young men were selected to make the team.  And despite many of them having dual commitments to hockey, they were fully committed.  The boys had a good introduction to the rest of the season by a strong performance in their first tournament at RDC.  Though they did not win in the semi finals, they were able to work through some growing pains and came out with some clear positions and roles in the end.  Our next weekend saw us at Thurber with only 8 players. In the end, that may have helped us work through even more things with a lot of court time for these individuals.  They played through some tough teams and ended up with a gold medal. The weekend after that was our home tournament, and unfortunately, one bad game caused the boys to play for bronze, which they were able to win.  In league, the boys fell to only two teams, Lacombe and St. Thomas, who ended up playing for gold together in CWAJHAAs. In that tournament our boys ended up playing for bronze, and won it in an amazing show of perseverance.  Though behind in every set, they mounted excellent comebacks that ended up a pretty exciting game. Exceptional play by Brayden Crowley and Connor Barber made for some exciting games throughout the season. Lyndon Robertson took on the role of setter and continued to improve consistently all season long, evolving into a dangerous server.  Kieler LeRoux was a double threat in setting and hitting, making us change our offense to a 6-2 set up to utilize both skills. Kalem Ward simply stole the show with his consistent and effective play. Everyone else all showed times of excellence themselves in their various roles, and it made me proud to be their coach. I will miss working with these guys.

JV GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

COACHES - RACHELLE FALLIS, EMILY STEWART

The JV Girls started the season strong, battling to win against both Lindsay Thurber and Notre Dame for Bronze in our home tournament. They improved immensely throughout the season, working hard to maintain their status as leaders in the league. After some losses in the middle of the season, the girls came back for a fight during playoffs, winning in the semi finals against Lindsay Thurber and again in the finals against Notre Dame. They ended their season as Zone Champions with gold medals on their necks. It was a well deserved, impressive league win that they had worked towards all season.

SR WOMENS VOLLEYBALL

COACHES - ADAM SILLERY, GEOFF TRENTHAM, SYDNEY RIX

We had a fantastic year of competition. The Sr girls took gold in three tournaments which included the fall volleyball classic, St.Joes Air Attack Tournament and the Hunting Hills Invitational. We also had three players named as 1st team all stars (the best at their position in the league) which were Avery Burger, Cam Martinez, and Taylor Leroux. Our team finished 1st in the Central 4A league and went on to win the zone title. It was a breakout year and we hope to continue pursuing an elite level of volleyball for years to come.

2019 was a great season for Hunting Hills senior football. We played in our tenth consecutive league championship game, and won our 8th title in the last 10 years. We also qualified for provincial play for the 8th year in a row. We had a league high 10 all-stars and for the 9th consecutive year we had players recognized with major league awards; Adam Fort was Lineman of the Year and Joel DeMale was the Defensive Player of the Year.

BANTAM FOOTBALL

COACH - JOSH SORENSEN

MANAGER - CHRYSTAL SAXBY

This past year we started this season with only a few returning players so we had to learn the game very quickly as a team. We as a coaching staff were really impressed with the attentiveness and desire to learn from the new players. We grew a lot as a team through this process and had a lot of fun along the way participating in multiple team building activities. It was amazing seeing the relationships and bonds that were built through the season. We did not have the final results we set as a team, but gained valuable experience and friendships that I think will really benefit our bantam and senior teams going forward. We are really looking forward to next season due to the fact that almost half of our team will be returning.

SR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

COACHES - JILL DE JONGE, HAROLD POTTS, AMANDA STONEHOUSE

The Senior Girls Basketball team had a phenomenal year of growth and found all different kinds of success along the way.  They were a young team, but managed to earn a spot in the final at the Bev Facey Tournament in Sherwood Park. For the first time since 1999, they won the CASAA league trophy,  They defeated Lindsay Thurber in a best of 3 series in the Championship Final to earn a berth in the ASAA Provincials. Sadly, their season was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, which led to the Provincial Tournament being cancelled.  These girls competed incredibly hard throughout the season and became like a family on and off the court. They represented HOME with class and showed a great deal of HEART, HOPE and HONOUR along the way!

COACHES - MATT TILLAPAUGH, CHARLIE JORGENSEN, MATT THOMSON

This year's edition of the Sr. Boys team saw many successes.  We finished the regular season with a 7-2 league record (undefeated against 4A schools) which placed us in a tie for second place.  Unfortunately we lost in the zone semi-final to the eventual zone winners.  The strength of this team was the legacy the gr. 12's left for the younger players who will follow in their Bleed Blue mentality and character on doing things the right way.  Thank you and good luck to all of the graduating  players and to the returning players, we'll see you on the court next year!

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

COACH - KEVIN DE JONGE

The JV Girls Basketball team experienced a tremendous year of individual and collective growth. They finished the regular season with a record of 7-2. With many strong finishings at tournaments throughout the year, the girls were able to come away with a 4th place position at the year end league championships. It was an absolute pleasure to coach this team. I cannot wait to see how they progress in their athlete careers moving forward.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

COACH - DAN HENRY

The JV Boys Basketball team had a great year. They competed hard all season long and were rewarded with tournament success and a solid regular season result. We finished second in the regular season standings. A Zones championship didn't go our way, as we ended up finishing fourth, but it was a competitive weekend and I'm proud of the way the team played. This team was not just an honour to coach, but a pleasure to coach as well. I felt great going into practices and games with this group all season long. I'm excited to see how each player develops and continues in the Lightning Basketball Program.

GRADE NINE GIRLS BASKETBALL

COACHES - FIONA HICKS, JESSICA JORGENSEN

This year’s grade 9 girls basketball team had a successful season in a tough league. The girls won Silver at our home tourney, bronze in Strathmore and wrapped up their season with a bronze medal at CWAJHAA championship tournament.  It’s quite remarkable to watch how much they improved from the start of the season and we look forward to watching them as they continue to the next level.

GRADE NINE BOYS BASKETBALL

COACH - PETRO KHIMYCH

Grade 9 boys basketball team had a season with lots of growth, with some ups and downs in the process. The highlights of the season were a league win over Lindsay Thurber and bronze medals in the Leduc tournament.

Nevertheless, their dedication, commitment, and countless hours of hard work should overshadow their team accomplishments.

CURLING

COACHES - CHUCK BLACKBURN, HOLLY VOLLANS

We had 11 students come out sporadically during our weekly practices for fun and learning the basics of curling as for many it was their first time.  Kolbe Blackburn, Brodie Hamilton, Jacob Crosby, Massimailano Tamborski, and Matt Hanson committed to represent HHHS on a boys team. Areas were held in Red Deer, and despite 1 dislocated shoulder injury, we were able to move onto Zones.  Zones were held in Camrose where we saw the boys make great shots, miss a few, share some laughs and make memories. I believe our job is complete.

Thanks to Coach Chuck Blackburn for giving our students the chance to come out to learn a new sport that will last a lifetime.
