GRADE 9

Our season began in mid-March with indoor training and, after moving outdoors near the end of April, culminated with the city championships on June 5 th . Our team of 18 athletes who trained regularly and another dozen or so chosen from their PE classes performed very well at the meet, finishing second to Lindsay Thurber in all categories. Coaches Kaiser, Lush, Roscoe, Henriksen, Hebert and Fredrickson are excited about next year’s senior track team and are hoping that each of this year’s Gr. 9 team make up a strong grade 10 contingent on that team.

SENIOR TRACK AND FIELD

The high school track and field team this year was, as with most sports, a special 25th anniversary edition! 38 athletes competed at the Area 1 Meet, with 22 finishing 1 st or second in at least 1 event, thereby qualifying for the Zone 4 Meet on May 29 th . Of those, 21 competed, 12 of them with top 2 performances which qualified them to compete at the Provincial Championships in Calgary on June 7th and 8th . Difficult weather and very

tough competition saw many of our kids finish lower than expected or hoped-for on Day 1, though they have every reason to be proud of the way they represented our Home. Day 2 ended with Keanna Richards and Christiana Oladele earning the Lightning’s only medals of the meet, helping the Zone 4 x 400m mixed relay team to a 3rd place finish! Many thanks go out to all of our coaches, Mrs. Wasmuth, Mr. Tillapaugh, and Mr. and Mrs. De Jonge for their work in making this season one to remember!

The boys team welcomed a new set of coaches and a new direction for the program; the team was fortunate to have some expertise. With a lot of young players, this year was focused on long term development as well as being competitive in league play. The team has had a very successful year and will play in the A Final this weekend.

GIRLS RUGBY

COACHES - JUSTIN PILGRIM, LESLEY YOUNG, KAMALA PILGRIM, OLIVIA WATSON, ELISE BLUETT, MONA BOYLE

This year we started off with a bang with 40 girls signed up at the beginning.

This year we had a very strong team. Finishing top in the Central Alberta Rugby league for the first time, with an undefeated record of 4-0.  Unfortunately our season ended abruptly in provincial qualifiers. However this was a very good year for us and the Leadership team did an amazing job in getting the team to come together as a Family, a very, very large family.   I look forward to coaching again next year. We have a lot of talent moving up and it will be sad to see the great 12s move on to bigger and better things.

The motto “we are lightning!” we are family was evident this year in the Rugby team. Lead by a new head coach who gained respect both on and off the field. Training started on February 15th - 3 to 4 nights per week, the season finished for the team June, 3rd. Yes, the team felt at HOME and full of HEART.

The team wants to thank all of their supporters and the Rugby parents that have helped each and every player during this season. Rugby is a very tough demanding sport, each player did the best they could through each practice and every game. Boys Rugby here at HHHS is taking a turn this year, as this year was a development year for the team. The team will wear their jersey with HONOUR and pride, as the core team of strong players plan to dominate the high school rugby scene next year.

GRADE 9 BADMINTON

Grade 9 Boys and Girls Badminton had a very short but successful season.  We had our boys doubles and mixed doubles win gold, and girls singles win silver at CWAJHAA. Our girls doubles team won silver at the city finals and girls singles won bronze at the city tournament as well.  A great overall showing by HHHS Grade 9 badminton players!

SENIOR BADMINTON

COACHES - JIM BUSSARD, SHEILA SILLERY

The senior badminton team showed up in full force this year.  Friendships were made, battles were plentiful and everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the gift of sport. The results were outstanding.  The team achieved 14 medals in areas and 11 medals at zones qualifying them to compete at provincials. At provincials, all 7 doubles teams and singles players made it to at least the ¼ finals. The teams biggest success was placing second overall at provincials for most wins by a school. Way to Go Hunting Hills Senior Badminton!

BOYS HANDBALL

COACHES - DOM GOMES, DANIEL HENRY

The senior boys only lost one regular season game to finish second in league play. The team had a lot of rookies who had never played handball before, but they picked up this new game very well. Next season looks promising with a lot of returning players who now have some competitive handball experience. Watch out for this team next year. Thanks for a great season boys, we had a great time coaching you.

GIRLS HANDBALL

COACHES - HAYLEY LUSH, RACHELLE FALLIS

At the start of our season, our girls were excited to learn the wonderful game of team handball. Majority of our team was brand new with either little to no knowledge of the game. The rest of them had played, but just need to tweak their skills to make them better. Our girls instantly gelled together as a team and started to grow confidence in their skills and the game itself. In our first two games, the girls were impressed with their skill and were excited to see how far they had come from last year. They kept improving at every practice and game throughout the rest of our season. They walked away with a silver medal at zones this year. As their coaches, we could not have been happier with the way our season went, and the group of girls that were apart of our team.

CURLING

COACHES - DEAN WOZNESENSKY, SCOTT BILLAN

STAFF LIAISONS - BRENDA BOOTH, KIM KAISER

The 2018/2019 HH Curling season had a great turn out to begin our season. We had curlers of all skill levels show up to work on skill development and we were able to see vast improvements from everyone in attendance. After several months of evaluating we were able to put together one of the best mixed teams a school could ask for. Our mixed team was feared at Areas and very dominate at Zones, only losing 1 game out of 8 and finishing with a bronze medal.

We say goodbye to 4 of our long time curling team members, Nicholas, Kaitlyn, Geoff, Hanna and wish them all the best in their future endeavors post graduation and look forward to developing the skills of the future HHHS Curl teams.

COACHES- MATT TILLAPAUGH, CHARLIE JORGENSEN, STEELE MCDONALD

The Sr. Men's basketball team had a very competitive year!  They competed in the Lillian Osborne Legends tournament, the Bev Facey Falcon Invitational, LTCHS, Notre Dame Classic and our own Scott Doan Memorial Tournament.  We finished strong in league play with a winning season record, however we lost out in the Zone semi-final to end our season. However, the foundation is in place for the future to continue building the program off of the successes attained this year.

SR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

COACHES - JILL de JONGE, HAROLD POTTS, AMANDA STONEHOUSE, LAWRIE SAUNDERS

The Senior Girls showed a lot of improvement over the season.  They represented Hunting Hills with pride. Highlights would be securing a second place finish in league after defeated Lindsay Thurber, Notre Dame and St. Joes.  They won their zone semi-final against Lacombe and lost a heartbreaking best of 3 series in the zone final against Lindsay Thurber. We wish all the graduating seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors.

The JV Boys Basketball team had a great year full of success, failures, learning, and growth. They had mild success in tournaments throughout the year, winning the consolation side in the Ardrossan Tournament and finishing second in the Notre Dame Tournament. Everything lined up at the end of the year as the team won three hard fought games to win the Zones Championship.

Good Things Come In Threes - has a definite positive connotation. From fairy tales to Hollywood blockbusters, “the rule of three” principle suggests things that come in threes are inherently more humorous, satisfying and effective than any other number of things. This years JV Girls squad lived up to this popular reference. The Girls brought home Third place hardware "3" times this year at various tournaments. The head coach would like to thank each member of this team for reinvigorating his passion for the sport and providing a reminder of how great it is to be surrounded by hard working, committed and enjoyable young athletes.

GR 9 BOYS BASKETBALL

COACHES - ANDREW WILSON, PETRO KHYMICH

The Hunting Hills Lighting grade 9 boys basketball team came into the season with a bit of a shaky mindset. When asked what the goal of the season was most players responded with "I would like to win a game" or something along those lines.

They were told right then and there they would achieve far more than win one game. With a strong commitment to defence and hustle spearheaded by Jon Sansom's intense energy every game the boys were able to not only succeed but begin to thrive.

League play was not kind to the lighting boys as injuries amassed and close game after close game was lost. They did manage to pick up a few wins in that category but tournament play is where the team really began to shine. Not only did they win more than one game,

but they came within one game of winning the entire Lindsay Thurber classic tournament earning a season-best second place finish. In their final tournament of the year, they ended strong winning their last two games in convincing fashion beating teams easily that had troubled the team before.

It was an absolute pleasure to coach this group of young men, and given the opportunity would gladly do it again. I hope each, and every one of them continues their basketball career into high school.

GR 9 GIRLS BASKETBALL

COACHES - ROBERT MCFARLANE, REBECCA PAUL

STAFF LIAISONS - HOLLY VOLLANS, HAYLEY LUSH

This season was a great one for both individual and team growth. Each and every player increased their personal skill as well as improving the overall play of the team.  A good example of this was the improvement made in making 3-point shots. At the beginning of the year, not one player was confident on the 3-point line, but by the end of the season, multiple players were making 3’s regularly. Another area that every single player improved in, was defensive capability. This was evident in the Lacombe round robin tournament. The girls won all three games, but more importantly, prevented all three teams from scoring more than 15 points. A great defensive accomplishment! This season there was a broad range of teams the girls competed with, some strong and others weaker. This made it a challenge to continually elevate game-play, as many teams were a lot less skilled. The tougher games were spread out, so it was difficult to maintain that level of intensity throughout the season. Every loss this season was a hard-fought battle, and not once did any of the girls give up. Through the ups and downs of the season, the team continuously built stronger relationships with their teammates and remained excited about basketball. Although the final tournament did not end as we had hoped, the girls finished strong and came out with two wins to conclude the season. Each defeat and challenge allows for growth and development, which both the players and the coaching staff experienced throughout the season. It was a privilege and a pleasure coaching such a great group of girls who genuinely love the game of basketball.

TEAM MANAGER - SANDY JOHNSON

TEAM STAFF - DUANE BROWN, JIM BROWN, JUSTIN COOPER, WYLE CUNNINGHAM, GRAHAM VANDERWATER, GEORGE VICKERY, ALYSA HOLM, DYLAN METZ, LAUREL STEPHAN

This was a great year for Hunting Hills senior football; we played in our ninth consecutive league championship game, won our 7th league title over that time and finished with bronze in the province in Tier II for the fourth straight year. No other central Alberta team has accomplished that in any tier.

We had 10 league all-stars recognized, and for the eighth consecutive year we had players recognized with a major league award; Joel DeMale was the Rookie of the Year and Dolan Hills was the league’s MVP.

TEAM STAFF - ERIC ALBERT, JARRETT BURZUK, LYNSIE FLEMING, BRETT MILNER, STEVE MOSER, JAY PIKE, EDWIN RIVERA, HEATHER RIVERA, DARREN SAXBY

This past year our bantam football team had a tough year battling an unusual amount of injuries. Despite these injuries our coaching staff was extremely impressed with how the team faced the adversity. They never used these injuries as an excuse to quit or give up on the season. They continued to play hard and displayed heart and honor in the way they competed throughout the rest of the season. We would like to wish all our grade nines luck as they make their way up to play for our senior team in this upcoming season.

The 2018 Cross Country season turned out to be most challenging in terms of Winter like weather that Central Alberta experienced through much of September and October.  Our first competition of the season, the annual Red Shoe Run was run in a blizzard on September 13.  The Dawe Run on September 18 saw Lightning athletes winning three medals:  Blaise Elliot won a bronze in the Grade 9 Boys Race. Shianna Duda won gold and Kenna Richards won bronze in the High School Girls Race.

Several Lightning athletes competed in "Bills Trail Run" in Lacombe on Saturday September 29 as well as the "Run for Life 5 km." race in Red Deer on the chilly and windy morning of September 30.  Sub zero temperatures and snow were once again the norm at the Central Alberta High School Zone Meet in Camrose on Oct. 10.  Seven Lightning athletes advanced to the provincials.   Our top performance came from Will Cebuliak who won the bronze medal in the Sr. Men's 6 kilometer race.  At the Alberta Provincial High School Championships in Vermillion on October 20,  Will again had a fantastic run finishing in 6 th. place in the province. Coach Lush, Coach Brown, Coach Henry and Coach Falkenberg were very happy to work with such a dedicated and enthusiastic group of athletes this season.

SENIOR BOYS VOLLEYBALL

COACHES - BLAKE HENWOOD, RYAN BEATSON

The senior boys made some positive strides this season. Over the course of 5 tournaments, exhibition, league and playoff matches they managed to finish the season with a winning record above .500 This was a significant improvement compared to the past few seasons. For the first time in several years, the team defeated Lindsay Thurber on 2 occasions as well as defeating Notre Dame. The highlight of the season was right here in our own gymnasium, finishing with a Bronze medal in our home tournament.

The Sr. girls Volleyball team had a year filled with lots of growth, perseverance and determination. The girls attended five tournaments with a top performance in the fall volleyball classic, earning a silver medal. The team played  Lacombe in our final league game; we played one of our best matches of the season and thumped them 3 games to 0 to advance into the semi final against Notre Dame. We played a very tight game with ND but ended up taking a loss and earning third place finish in the league finals. Avery Burger earned a league All Star; the only grade 11 in the league to earn the award.  Congratulations Avery.

JV BOYS VOLLEYBALL

COACH - TJ HARTEL

The JV boys put together one of most successful seasons we’ve seen from a HHHS boys team in years. They finished with an overall record of 23-7 and earned two gold and 2 silver medals in tournaments and playoffs. Above all of that, this team went out of their way to carry themselves with class and honour all season and represented everything we want from the athletes in our program.

JV GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

COACHES - RON HEWER , BAILEY BEINGESSNER

2018 was a year of growth for this team. Finishing 2nd in the Notre Dame tournament was a turning point for this team where they learned that they could compete with any team they faced. Serving and blocking was by far our strong point.  This team should not be measured by its wins and loses, however by the development of all of the players within the team. This was a team that played with #HEART throughout the season. This group of girls definitely illustrated to our competition that we #Bleed Blue, and that our Hunting Hearts are filled with passion for the game.

GR 9 BOYS VOLLEYBALL

COACH - PATRICK MCLEAN

The 2018 grade 9 boys volleyball season was absolutely one to remember. We played in three tournaments, RDC, Thurber and our own.  In the RDC tournament, we lost only two games and won 4 to finish in third place.

The next weekend we moved on to Thurber’s tournament and took silver medals home. In our home tournament we played 7 games, and lost only one but had to settle for a 5th place finish..

In league play we ended the season with a perfect record and took home the trophy for first place! In CWAJHAAs the boys came out ready to take it all.  Despite a loss to HJ Cody in the round robin, they started swinging hard.  We ended up facing off with Thurber in the semi finals in what was a truly great game of Volleyball! On to the finals and the boys took the gold medal!

GR 9 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

COACHES - RACHELLE FALLIS, LEXI BARON

The Grade 9 Girls Volleyball Team started the year with an unexpectedly complicated tryout process. They dealt with the changes with grace, by taking to the court and winning their first two tournaments. It was easy to tell early on, the incredible skill and potential of the team. The middle of the season became more challenging as other teams rose to their level. Regardless, the girls proved themselves yet again by taking home two more gold medals at the end of the season, earning a first place CWAJHAA title.
